Top 5 iconic beaches in the USA

story by: House of Travel

Baywatch, surfer dudes, bay side bodybuilders and even Jersey Shore and countless other ‘reality’ TV shows, no country has been more influential to beach culture than the USA. And of course there’s Hawai`i, the quintessential island paradise. Whether you’re visiting the mainland or its archipelagic state in Polynesia, there’s no shortage of amazing beaches. These top five iconic beaches may not be the ones you choose if you’re trying to get away from it all, but if you want an engrossing afternoon of people watching, celebrity spotting, or losing yourself in the music and nightlife, then these are the beaches for you.

1. Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California
Beach lovers love Santa Monica, with its golden sand, temperate waters and pier that simply drips with vintage cool. Hire a bike or stroll along the pier and take a ride on the ferris wheel for its expansive city and sea views. Catch a glimpse of the historic carousel and soda fountain, check out the original Muscle Beach or visit the Santa Monica Farmers’ Markets for some great fresh produce and maybe some celeb sightings.

2. Laguna Beach, Orange County, California
The Laguna coastline offers a stunning array of sandy shores. Lounge seaside and soak up some rays, or get active and swim, surf or skimboard in the waves. Enjoy a nature walk, slip away and relax at a blissful spa or sign up for a yoga retreat. The Laguna Art Museum is a must for art enthusiasts, then there’s all the shopping and dining you could dream of!

3. South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida
South Beach in Miami, Florida, has it all: architecture, shopping, history, culture, beach life and good times. Ocean Drive is the place to be at night and a great place to look for celebrities! The Art Deco District has so much history all around and the architecture is to die for. For dining and shopping, check out Lincoln Road. The beach itself has amazing people watching, but if you are wanting to hang out by the water during the day, make sure you pick a hotel that has a private part of the beach to ensure you get a spot.

4. Waikiki Beach, O`ahu
The undoubted centre of resort life on O`ahu is Waikiki, and with good reason. The beach is splendid, the water crystal clear and the aloha welcome genuine. Spend the morning tanning and swimming before escaping the midday sun to spoil yourself rotten with fantastic shopping. It’s a great place to learn to catch your first wave at Waikiki; they even have surf lessons for toddlers!

5. Maui
After a busy couple of days on O`ahu, hop over to Maui to enjoy some of Hawaii’s natural charm and splendid scenery. You can pick from any number of beaches on the island of Maui and be blown away with its beauty. From strolling the beaches and hiking in the jungle to watching out for whales, it's a nature-lover's paradise. Maui's a great place to take the plunge and explore the underwater world. Snorkel or scuba dive to come face to face with an array of bright coral, friendly sea turtles and tropical fish all colours of the rainbow. Some of the top spots are the northern section of Ka`anapali Beach near Black Rock, or the small island of Molokini, which is just southwest of Maui.
