Our 10 Favourite North American Self Drives

story by: House of Travel

No travel bucket list is complete without the archetypal North American road trip holding a prime position. Hours of open road, beautiful and diverse scenery, roadside diners and countless cultural bedrocks that have set the tone for Western culture for a hundred years. Here’s our top 10 favourite North American self drives.

Route 66
The quintessential United States road trip. As Nat King Cole sang back in 1946, “If you ever plan to motor west, travel my way, take the highway that is best. Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.”

Drive through St Louis, Amarillo, Tulsa, Santa Fe, Grand Canyon and Las Vegas, ending in Santa Monica. Enjoy some of the most amazing and diverse scenery and highlights such as the Mississippi River, Petrified Forest National Park at Holbrook and Cadillac Ranch, where you will find ten Cadillacs half buried in sand.

Pacific Coast Highway
Stretching from Seattle to Los Angeles, this drive gives you a taste of the forest, ocean and city. Drive through Washington State’s wild natural environment and wind your way around the dramatic, jagged cliffs on the Oregon Coast. Explore the city of San Francisco, the beaches of Malibu and Santa Monica before reaching the land of glitz and glamour, Hollywood in L.A.

Blues Highway (including Nashville & New Orleans)
Listen to the music from Nashville, Tennessee to New Orleans, Louisiana. Drive the legendary, U.S. Route 61 aka The Blues Highway on an extraordinary voyage of culture and fine southern cuisine.

The Great Gatsby Getaway
You might have read the book, you’ve likely seen the film - so why not take a drive to some of the locations key to this American tale? Check out Gatsby’s accommodation of choice, the Plaza Resort, then make your way to the Hamptons on Long Island, where much of the novel’s narrative is set and where author F. Scott Fitzgerald was based. Relax in Cape Cod then make your way to your final destination of the historic city of Boston.

The 42 bridges to Key West, Florida
What other road trip boasts 42 bridge crossings and 34 islands? The 42 bridges to Key West drive starts in Miami before finishing in Key West, only around 150kms away from Cuba. On the way experience magical snorkelling opportunities and even the odd pirate ship sighting.

Alaska Glacier Drives
Perfect for a short holiday or in addition to a cruise, the drive takes you along Alaska’s most scenic roads. Daylight is close to 24 hours a day in the months of May and June which makes driving even easier. Glaciers, wildlife and whales in Prince William Sound are just some of the highlights you may experience as you take in Alaska’s natural beauty at your own pace. The drive includes Denali National Park and views of St Elias Mountains, Worthington Glacier and Keystone Canyon on the approach to Valdez. Drive on to the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry and sail the Prince William Sound to Whittier then continue by road to Seward before returning to your starting point of Anchorage.

Whistler and the Canadian Rockies
Explore the charming village of Whistler and the best of the Canadian Rockies. From Maligne Lake near Jasper to iconic Lake Louise and the quaint town of Banff, you’ll have some amazing memories and photographs to take home with you.

Bruce Canyon, Zion National Park and Las Vegas
Enjoy glittering Las Vegas then head out to view some unique landscapes including Zion’s massive sandstone cliffs, the rich colours of Bryce Canyon’s famous spires, the red rock wonderland of Arches National Park and the Grand Canyon.

Touring By Motorbike with EagleRider
No movie in history has had an effect on the motorcycle world like ‘Easy Rider’. When it debuted in 1969, Easy Rider introduced the freedom of riding a motorcycle in America to people all over the world. Emulate the Easy Rider movie with an epic journey from LA to New Orleans. There are other various tours available, like Route 66, California coastline expeditions, or a Wild West journey through the grandeur of Monument Valley and the Rocky Mountains.
