Top Three South American Destinations for Adventure

story by: House of Travel

South America is a place where nature and culture combine to make a stunningly vibrant holiday destination. If you're an adventurer at heart, there are many opportunities waiting for you.

Exciting Ecuador
Where better to travel for adventure than this diverse country in the middle of the world? This is a unique area that offers a natural wonderland, including islands, mountains, jungles and the vast ocean.

The wildlife here is rich and varied - be sure to get up close and personal with an interactive experience. One of the best experiences in this country is undoubtedly swimming with dolphins in Posorja, which is a quaint town known for fishing and bottlenose dolphin colonies. These colonies draw people from around the world.

The surf capital of Ecuador is Montanita, and La Punta is a more hidden break that is a must-visit. If you're after a challenge, check out Cimborazo. Climb to the top of this mountain, and you will be closer to the sun than anywhere else in the world. Once the highest peak on the planet, it stands at 6,310 metres tall.

There are many routes up the mountain. With each come prepared to do both rock and ice climbing. This is perfect for those who seek thrills and adventure.

Santo Domingo de los Colorados is one of the best places to try white water rafting in all of the Western Andes. You'll see some stunning scenery while on your journey, such as canyons and villages, lowlands and forests.

Crazy Chile
If you can't get enough of the snow, head to Chile for skiing and snowboarding! Particularly central and southern Chile, where there are some of the best slopes in the world.

Whether you're a beginner or an expert, there is the spot for you. Don't know where to start? Farellones, La Parva and El Colorado are decked out with some amazing ski locations as well as great places to stay and eat. La Parva is the place to go for expansive views of this glorious surrounding area and Santiago.

On your Chile travels, see what it feels like to fly and take the chance to go paragliding. Those who love the sport head to Iquique, which is in the northern part of the country. This area is made for paragliding because there are so many cliffs, soaring dunes and prime wind currents.

No matter what time of year it is, you'll most likely be able to try your hand at this thrilling adventure activity. It's also a wonderful way to witness the landscape of the area - whether you glide over the bustling city of Santiago, or see the sea through the eyes of bird.

In the far north of Chile is one of the driest places on earth. The Atacama Desert will go without rainfall for years, and looks like the closest thing to Mars on earth. The desert is littered with salt flats, also a famous base for astronomy, all while providing views of the majestic snow-capped Andes Mountains. It certainly makes for out-of-this world photography opportunities. Mountain bike, hike or simply relax in the idyllic and peaceful surroundings of this area.

At the very bottom of Chile lies the vast, barely touched mountains and glaciers of Patagonia, a region shared with Argentina, and what feels like the most beautiful end to the world. Almost 500 years have passed since Patagonia was discovered, the words we use to describe it now are the same as those invoked by the first spectators: exotic, remote, vast, infinitely beautiful, wild and untameable. Make use of the beautiful backdrops as much as possible by hiking, cycling, horseback riding and kayaking the various terrain on offer. Patagonia is a truly special place on this earth, and it helps you realise that seeing natural beauty with your own eyes is priceless.

Brilliant Brazil
Those who travel to Brazil seeking adventure will not be disappointed. The thriving area has many opportunities, including canopy tours and zip lining. With zip lining, you'll be strapped into a harness and swoop through the trees. The canopy tours are ideal for those who want to take their time when they experience the tops of the native forests.

Do you love animals and adventure? Horse riding safaris are a great way to see the natural wonders of Brazil. The Pantanal is a popular place to go. The wetlands are home to hundreds and thousands of colourful and fascinating animals. Some rare and endangered creatures you could spot include jaguars, giant anteaters and the giant river otter.

The coastline of Brazil is lined with bountiful and beautiful beaches. There are also some world-class surfing spots. If you've been surfing for years and are looking for something fresh, head to Fernando de Noronha Island. Here you'll find huge swells that will leave you breathless and eager for more. While you're there, try scuba diving, as the marine wildlife is truly spectacular and not to be missed.
