Family Cruising in the South Pacific

story by: Mike Williams

Cruising is surely the perfect family holiday solution. It’s cost-effective, features multiple exciting destinations and there’s plenty to do on-board. Many family-friendly cruise lines feature great facilities for all members of a family from tots to grandparents. Over two million kids younger than 15 cruised in 2013, and with cruise lines offering more family-friendly cruises, innovative amenities, child-care services and kids clubs, that number is sure to keep growing.

For New Zealand families, a South Pacific cruise is particularly attractive. The cruises are closer to home so the kids spend less time in the air. The school holiday periods tend to feature a range of exciting family-orientated cruise itineraries.

Advantages of South Pacific Cruise
There’s plenty of advantages to choosing a South Pacific cruise over a stay on an island resort. The family will get to see multiple ports and experience more local cultures. South Pacific itineraries work well for families with lots of activity on land, to appeal to people of all ages. As you sail between ports, children can enjoy the vast facilities on the ship with something to suit all ages. All meals are included in the price and feature great kids’ lunch and dinner menus, such as spaghetti and meatballs, hot dogs and burgers.

Great for Families
One of the best things about a family cruise is that parents get the chance to relax. The kids clubs offer amazing activities and allow the kids to have fun with their own age group. Fun activities might include arts and crafts, creating music or puppet theatres and pyjama parties.

Meanwhile, parents can watch a show, have a drink at the bar or just relax by the pool. Some ships even offer kids’ activities on board while in-port, so the adults can go on-shore to explore. Teenagers are also well catered for, with separate teen zones including lounges, discos and games.

Of course, a family holiday is about spending time together too. Swimming pools on a number of cruise lines boast water parks with water guns and small pool zones. Movies under the Stars is a great family option in the evening – sitting on the top deck with a giant movie screen, comfortably lounging on a deck chair with popcorn and drinks. Cabin accommodation caters for families with interconnecting rooms or large family-size suites, but be sure to book early.

Pacific Island cruises out of Auckland and Sydney are very popular with family groups. Have a family holiday on Royal Caribbean International. With the ease of leaving from Auckland aboard the Pacific Pearl, you’ll discover the diverse landscapes of Lifou, the beautiful beaches of Mystery Island and Isle of Pines and the local market stalls in Port Vila.
