Tackle the Great Cycling Tours of Australia

story by: House of Travel

Australia is one incredibly big land mass, home to a diverse range of landscapes, habitats and natural features.

One fantastic and different way to explore some of what Australia has to offer is by cycling. Take an active holiday and see the sights with the wind rushing through your hair and nature right within your reach.

There are a number of options when it comes to where to cycle and how. Whether you want to take a tour or plot out your own journey, or embark upon an adventure with your family or as a couple, there's something out there on two wheels for everyone.

Here is some more information about the kinds of cycling tours available around Australia.

Barossa and Margaret River wine regions
Does cycling past miles of stretching vines sound appealing to you? Then head to the Barossa in South Australia and also Western Australia’s Margaret River wine region for your adventure. There are both self-guided and group tour options available here, so you can choose which best suits you.

Group tours have the added benefit of feeling extra safe and secure, but self-guided tours offer more freedom and independence - so the choice is yours!

In any case, the Barossa and Margaret River wine regions offer plenty of opportunity for discovery, from stopping off at vineyards' cellar door tastings to visiting boutique breweries.

Cycle through forest, orchards, past art galleries and through quaint towns and enjoy the finer things in life.

Byron Bay coastal region
Head to the beautiful coastline surrounding Byron Bay, stretching from Ballina in New South Walkes up to Queensland’s Gold Coast. Soar past vast and pristine beaches, enjoy the laid-back coastal culture that brims with musical and artistic talent, and take in stunning seaside sunsets.

Not to mention you'll be able to feast on some well-earned meals, including freshly caught seafood and juicy tropical fruits.

Don't forget to take a dip in the ocean to cool off at least once!

Great Ocean Road
Great Ocean Road is a famous Victorian road trip route, but we'll let you in on a secret: It's even better if you cycle it! Take the time to soak in the dramatic coastal cliff views, the swirling ocean and the incredible natural phenomena, such as the Twelve Apostles - the massive limestone structures that tower 45 metres above the tempestuous Southern Ocean.

Don't worry, after a hard day's cycle you'll be able to put your feet up at your comfortable accommodation and look back upon your amazing achievements and the wonderful sights you've seen.

Tropical North Queensland
Love lush green scenery, endless gorgeous beaches and sun, sun, sun? Then cycle your way through Tropical North Queensland, where everything's friendly, chilled out and relaxed.

Your route will take you to some incredible destinations, giving you access to the Atherton Tablelands just inland from Cairns, alongside the Great Barrier Reef and the ancient Daintree National Park.

Keep cool with plenty of ocean dips, ice cream stops and rests under the shade of a rainforest canopy, but be mindful of the local wildlife hazards.

For a more casual cycle, Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas offers a palm fringed long stretch of beach to cycle along – a great start to your day.

Victorian Alps
Trade the sun for the snow with a cycling tour to the Victorian Alps.

You'll get to ride through historic towns, past heritage railways and high, snowy peaks. Get ready to work those quads cycling uphill on this challenging, but incredibly rewarding, great Aussie cycling route.

The Munda Biddi Trail
Want to rise to a challenge and tackle 1,000km of cycling? Set aside a few weeks to try the Munda Biddi Trail, which traverses from Mundaring near Perth all the way south to Albany.

This is one wild ride that heads through heritage towns, through forests and bushland, across rivers and other plentiful natural wonders.

Whether you want a challenging cycle, or a more leisurely, scenic journey, there's a cycling trail and tour in Australia for you and your style of travel.
