Enjoy a Taste of the Hawke's Bay

story by: House of Travel

Hawke's Bay is one of New Zealand's most renowned wine regions, with a flair for all things that taste wonderful - and that includes the food.

If red wine is your kind of drop and gourmet your kind of fare, you just can't miss a journey to this corner of the country. With that in mind, here's some more information about the great food and drink you can find nestled amongst Hawke's Bay.

Hawke's Bay wines
One of the appeals of the wine from this region is that it's grown in conditions similar to some of the world's best in Bordeaux, France. That means you can expect to cross paths with some truly delicious reds, whether you prefer Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah.

There are over 70 wineries in the region, with many offering tastings or having affiliated restaurants, so you're in for a whole culinary experience.

Try Elephant hill, which is located on the Te Awanga Coast providing the grounds with stunning ocean views. Syrah, Pinot Noir and Rose are all grown here, as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay. Try the wines and indulge in a beautiful meal at the Elephant Hill Restaurant.

Then there's the well-known Trinity Hill winery at Stortford Lodge, Hastings. Visit the cellar door for a tasting in the original barrel hall, with its lofty ceilings and old-worldly feel. Get to know the wines and taste some really wonderful varieties you never knew you loved. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings, including pristinely manicured gardens complete with lily pond and a gorgeous wide open lawn space to relax in. During summer weekends there are often live music events and platters of food on offer, so you're bound to come across an array of tastes to remember.

Black Barn Market
Every summer locals and tourists flock to the Black Barn Grower's Market at the Black Barn Vineyards. This takes place on Saturday mornings throughout the summer months from approximately December to March, with local growers, producers, bakers and more coming to sell their wares. Asparagus, strawberries, artichokes, stone fruit, coffee, bread, flowers, olive oil, organic produce - these are just some of the items you'll find on offer at the market.

While you're there, take the time to explore the Black Barn Vineyard itself. This grows Bordeaux-style grapes producing acclaimed Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabinet Franc, with some whites such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc  thrown into the mix, too. As each grape is hand-picked you can expect wonderful quality.
The winery itself is on a north-facing slope and the views are absolutely stunning. Stop off for a meal at the Black Barn Bistro and treat yourself to delicious fresh, local produce.

Visit Napier
The city of Napier in the Hawke's Bay is well known for its wonderful cafe culture and inspiring Art Deco design.

From the beautiful palm trees along the water's edge to the city's gardens and inner cafe district, there's plenty to explore, enjoy and, of course, taste.

A favourite for a coffee or a sweet treat has to be the Silky Oak Cafe. This offers plenty of sweet treats with a focus on delicious melt-in-your-mouth chocolate. Its 'Extreme Chocolate' hot cuppa is a real delight - especially if you opt to have it with a dash of chilli.

There are plenty of wineries surrounding Napier too, such as the Mission Estate Winery and Church Road Winery, so you're spoilt for choice when it comes to more wine-tasting or fine dining.

Tempt your tastebuds with all sorts of flavourful morsels from around the area. All in all, a visit to the Hawkes Bay region is truly an experience your palate won't soon forget.
