Discover These Gorgeous Auckland Wineries

story by: House of Travel

The wider region of Auckland is home to some stunning wineries. If you're a fan of a good drop and a gourmet meal, make sure you visit some of the establishments in and around the city.

Here are some of the best you can find on Waiheke Island and in Matakana.

Waiheke Island wineries
Not only are you treated to stunning wineries on Waiheke Island, you also get to take in some truly breathtaking views.

Take Cable Bay winery for starters. Its gorgeous vines trace over rolling hills and produce top-quality wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, Syrah and more.

It's also home to a highly acclaimed wine bar and restaurant. Relax with a glass of your favourite wine over some small plates, or head to the restaurant for a full dining experience. It's won a plethora of awards and continues to draw rave reviews, so you know you're in for a delicious meal.

Outside the wine bar and restaurant is a large open lawn space, which provides beautiful views of the surrounding hills and bays.

Then there's the equally gorgeous Stonyridge Vineyard. This winery specialises in Cabernet blends, producing simply stunning Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Enjoy the full-bodied flavours that are a result of the vineyard's decision to follow traditional French winemaking techniques.

Dine at Stonyridge's Veranda Cafe, which is set amongst a picturesque grove of olive trees with gorgeous views of vineyards and hilly landscapes.

Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant is another Waiheke Island winery of note. With sustainability at the forefront of its winemaking process, it produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Syrah, Chardonnay and Viognier.
Visit the incredible restaurant, which is known for its high quality food and particularly romantic atmosphere. Try lunch, dinner or a cellar door tasting, or for a more relaxed experience visit the Wine Bar and Bistro. This is set amongst Mudbrick's beautiful gardens, with an outdoor stone fireplace, couches and gently glowing lamps.

Matakana wineries
Matakana is about an hour's drive north of central Auckland, and it is well worth a visit if you're a wine aficionado. Surrounded by gorgeous vineyards and beautiful coastline, the region ticks all the boxes.

Pay a visit to the acclaimed Ascension Vineyard, which boasts hand-crafted wines and innovative cuisine, not to mention a picturesque environment.

Make sure you visit the rustic cellar door for a wine tasting or treat yourself to some fine dining and order a full lunch - you won't be disappointed.

Omaha Bay Vineyard is another jewel in the Matakana region's crown. Family-owned, the establishment focuses on sustainable viticulture practices and produces luxurious Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and more. Visit the pristine grounds for a cellar door tasting and savour the tasting plates on offer, featuring artisan breads, cheeses, spreads and more.

Finally, be sure to experience Brick Bay Wines. Nestled amongst beautiful native bush, its 5 hectares of vines produce Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. Its vines are carefully nurtured and small yields are handpicked for quality assurance. There's even a charming olive grove on the land.

Visit Brick Bay wines for a tasting and enjoy delectable food platters surrounded by nature's beauty at the Glass House. This lovely building is right by a lake and is a great, relaxing place to enjoy your food and wine. Sit and watch the local bird life and take in the gorgeous views no matter what the season.

With so many high quality vineyards in the Auckland region, it's time to get discovering the flavours of your own backyard.
