Inspire Magazine - O'ahu: Hawaii's Gateway

story by: Inspire Magazine

Hawaii's most populous island, O‘ahu, is a dream for holidaymakers in search of sunny skies and sandy shores. Check out some of our top things to do, on and off the 180 kilometres of stunning coastline, while visiting this Hawaiian gem.

WHILE IN O'AHU...
  • Get around with the much-loved Waikiki Trolley, an open aired trolley that stops off at many of the island's prime locations.
  • Hit the shops. Visit Ala Moana, the world's largest open air shopping centre. It features around 290 shops and 70 eateries - fashionistas and foodies seventh heaven! Waikele Premium Outlets is another great destination full of bargains on a range of exciting brands - our advice is to leave plenty of room in your suitcase!
  • Explore the North Shore. Nature lovers, and anyone who wants to watch professional surfers, should definitely make a trip here. It's about an hour's drive from Waikiki and is one of the world's premier surfing destinations, with breathtaking beaches and big waves.
  • Learn how to catch your first wave at Waikiki! After checking out the pros, surely you’ll want to get your feet wet yourself. Since the early 20th century, Waikiki Beach Boys such as Duke Kahanamoku have been teaching visitors how to ride the waves. Simply sign up for a lesson at the booths on the beach and you’ll be catching a wave in no time.
  • Scrub up on your history. Take a visit to Pearl Harbour, the site of the December 7, 1941 attacks which is home to the USS Arizona Memorial, a floating memorial built over its sunken hull. Also check out one of the USA’s war submarines displayed at the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park.
  • And of course, soak up the rays on Oahu’s picturesque beaches. Take in the lively atmosphere on the iconic Waikiki Beach, snorkel with the colourful marine life at Hanaumu Bay or check out Waimea Bay – home to the Big Wave comps in the winter months.
