This year, the Grande Partenza, also known as the 'big start', of the cycling event is taking place in Belfast, Northern Ireland and finishing up in Dublin. From May 8 until 11, more than 200 elite cyclists will race over the countryside's rolling green hills to fight their way to the finish. The route stretches over hundreds of kilometres, and villages, towns and venues along the way are dressing up their buildings and streets to reflect the Italian-themed event. As contestants are racing for a pink jersey, many of the buildings are turning the pretty shade of blush, while others are hitching up Italian flags. Plenty of Italian dining will be on offer amongst all the pink decor! Check out the opening ceremony on Thursday May 8 at Belfast City Hall, followed by a 21.7km team time trial the next day. Saturday May 10 is bound to be full of highlights too, when a 218km leg of racing begins and traverses past landmarks such as the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coastal Route. The following day will see riders head through Armagh and south to Dublin through Dundalk, Drogheda and Balbriggan. Finally, they'll arrive in Dublin's city centre in Merrion Square where thousands of fans will be waiting to welcome them to the finish. Around 150,000 spectators are expected to gather at various vantage points along the way to watch, especially at hot spots Dublin, Belfast and Armagh. You can be a part of the action and watch the riders to tackle challenging terrain, from high mountains and deep valleys to coastal and inland areas.
