Tropical North Queensland Adventure

story by: House of Travel

Being the only place in the world where the rainforest meets the coral reef, there’s loads on offer to get you packing up and heading to the Tropical North for fun in the Queensland sun. Whether you want to kick back and relax on the beach or head out on a bucket list adventure, it’s all here waiting for you… in all its tropical goodness!

Cairns - Energised by Nature
Tropical North Queensland's biggest city still retains its small-town feel, with that laid-back beachside vibe stretching from the shore into the cafés and shops. Indulge in day spa treatments, dine with sea views, and explore stunning surrounding landscapes that include cascading waterfalls, lakes and an everexpansive tropical rainforest.

Surrender to this relaxed way of life where days can be spent enjoying the surf, biking on the beach or exploring the wilderness. Make sure you try a taste of Cairns' famous tropical flavours too.

Trinity Beach - Welcoming & Laidback
Trinity Beach, situated on the northern beaches of Cairns, is one of the region's treasures. This is a laidback town where you’ll really feel like a local in no time. Lay down your towel on a golden stretch of sand surrounded by palm trees and listen to the waves lapping on the shore…pure bliss.

Palm Cove - Romantic Escape
This stunning beach offers pure escapism. Stroll The Esplanade, laze on the beach or spend your day rejuvenating at a local spa. You could even get active kayaking or perfecting your swing on the local green. Whiz around on a jet ski or simply paddle in the shallows. Whatever you choose, you'll work up a hearty appetite that can be satiated at one of the sumptuous local restaurants.

Port Douglas - Relaxed Resort Town
Where the rainforest meets the reef, a pristine beach with palm trees, and a great community feel, you can't want for a thing here. Locals and visitors alike mix and mingle at the town’s restaurants and bars where you can find a variety of fresh local fare. You can even examine the marine realm from an underwater viewing chamber of a semisubmersible submarine - with the bonus of staying dry!

HOT Tips from Coast FM's Brian Kelly:

  1. BEST BEACH/COASTAL ESCAPE - Fitzroy Island, just a short 45 minute ferry trip from Cairns. Explore the Island’s rainforest, or swim and snorkel in the tropical island’s crystal clear waters and visit the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
  2. BEST BIT BEYOND THE BEACH - The amazing Treehouse restaurant located in the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest National Park. Walls and windows have been replaced with spectacular open air views of the Mossman River and surrounding rainforest.
  3. DON'T LEAVE THE REGION WITHOUT SEEING - The Daintree Discovery Centre, a 30 minute drive from Port Douglas. The Daintree tropical rainforest is the oldest rainforest in the world and at the centre everything is built off the ground to protect the fragile root systems.
  4. INSIDERS TIP - Take an overnight train journey on the Spirit of Queensland. This state of the art train passes through historic Queensland towns and cities like Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton. The Rail beds are amazing on board.

Tropical North Queensland TO DO LIST

Adventure through the Daintree Rainforest on a day tour, or just on your own take a hike through ancient thick trees, seeing what wildlife you can spot. For the more adventurous try your hand at 'Jungle Surfing' - soar over the canopy on ziplines and onto platforms where you get amazing birds' eye views.

The Mossman Gorge, in the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park, is an absolute gem with pristine rainforest, cool streams and the dramatic Gorge.

Gain an insight into the lives, culture and beliefs of the local Kuku Yalanji people at the Mossman Gorge Centre before heading off on a walk through the rainforest

In your Skyrail gondola cableway you will be transported over the top of the rainforest to Kuranda, a village tucked away amongst the forest. Explore the town, learn about its Aboriginal heritage, plus have a close encounter with local wildlife. Head back on the Kuranda Scenic Railway winding your way through the mountain ranges.

A magical dining experience which takes place amidst the rainforest. Indulge in fantastic food, delectable wine and a magical fairy light setting.

The World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, the largest reef structure in the world, comprises more than 2900 reefs and 900 islands stretching over 2000km! Dive, snorkel or simply be ON the water (you don’t even have to get wet!). There’s loads of adventurous options for everyone.

Imagine wandering off the beach to float in an aquamarine sea, watching fish swarm around the coral formations, while the sun warms your back…sound like your idea of heaven? Take a few days to relax and enjoy one of the islands of Tropical North Queensland. Discover Green and Fitzroy Islands, both easily accessible from Cairns, or the luxury Lizard Island which you can only get to by plane.
