Top 5 Things to Do in Abu Dhabi

story by: Jo Wedlock

Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second largest city of the United Arab Emirates in terms of population as well as being the largest of the seven members of the United Arab Emirates. In terms of location Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Arab Gulf from the central western coast.

It’s not a large city by Middle Eastern standards, with the city proper having a population of 2.6 million in 2014. While Dubai is arguably the more famous neighbour, Abu Dhabi is an amazing place to visit and explore. Here are five things you need to check out while you are there.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was initiated by the late President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), who wanted to establish a structure that unites the cultural diversity of Islamic world, the historical and modern values of architecture and art. It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the eighth largest mosque in the world. The mosque site is equivalent to the size of around five football fields. As the country's grand mosque, it is the key place of worship for Friday gathering and Eid prayers. It’s an amazing place to visit and gives you a real taste of local religion and culture in this part of the world.

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital
The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital is the first public institution in the UAE that provides vet care services exclusively for the surrounding regions’ Falcon population.  The hospital has become the largest Falcon hospital in the world and has homed more than 55,000 falcons in the last 13 years.  It’s an amazing place to visit if Falcons, wildlife and animal hospitals are on your agenda!

Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi
Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi is the UAE’s first mega waterpark, set across 15 hectares of the exciting entertainment complex that is Yas Island. The park offers 43 rides, slides and attractions that will thrill the whole family. Visitors will experience fun and adventure on rides and attractions never seen before in waterparks, such as the world’s longest and fastest tornado waterslide, the region’s first looping waterslide and the world’s first interactive water and laser rollercoaster. As with many Middle Eastern parks, this award-winning theme—based on an original story developed exclusively for the waterpark—pays tribute to the Emirati culture with the UAE’s pearl-diving heritage at the core, and will provide an unforgettable experience for young and old.

While you’re on Yas Island, check out Ferrari World, the largest indoor amusement park in the world and home to the world’s fastest roller coaster, Formula Rossa.

Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel
Ever been to a hotel built over a over an F1 race circuit? If not then a visit to Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel is a must. It’s located within the Yas Marina Circuit, venue for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The hotel cosists of two twelve story towers, one within the race circuit and the other in the Marina itself. They are linked by a steel and glass bridge that crosses over the Yas Marina Circuit F1 race track.

Another hotel worth a visit is the luxurious, seven star Emirates Palace. It has 114 domes, each 80 metres tall, and a private beach, not to mention the world's most expensive Christmas tree. There is even a cricket pitch and a rugby field.

Heritage Village
The Heritage Village at the end of the Abu Dhabi Corniche is a reconstruction of a traditional oasis village and gives a fascinating insight into pre-historic Abu Dhabi. You can see how villagers survived in the desert and watch garments being weaved or craftsmen create metal work and pottery in the various stalls. There is a spice shop where you can buy dried herbs and handmade soap.
