Travelling around the UK

story by: Jo Wedlock

The UK is the perfect place to combine different modes of transport to explore the best the country has to offer. While you will typically take a plane to get to the UK, once there, what are some of the best ways to see the country itself?  Weighing up cost versus flexibility, and the different types of scenery and places you want to enjoy, should be taken into account.

Speak to your House of Travel specialist for a spot of advice about what you are looking for and they’ll be able to steer you in the right direction – whether that is up a canal, down the M1 or on Virgin Rail – or a combination of all three.

The UK is one of the best places to view by train.  The rail network is extensive and frequent.  Unlike NZ, even the smaller regional towns all seem to have access to the railway, and the subways around London, Glasgow and other main centres are amazing.  Around the UK there are several different companies who offer key intercity railway.  British Rail and Virgin Rail are two of the main options.  If you have a bit of extra cash, upgrade your rail ticket to ‘first class’.  It’s not nearly as expensive as first class on a plane, and its luxury to get a glass of wine, sit in a private railway carriage, plug in your computer and access the Wi-Fi in your comfy lazy-boy style seat, as the British countryside whizzes past.  Rail is definitely one of the best ways to get around and the short 45 minute trip from Glasgow to Edinburgh is one of my favourite routes – check it out!

Boats and Barges
You could be forgiven for thinking that boat transport around the UK is on the ocean.  With NZ as our home, we are used to ocean transport. However, in the UK you really need to try canal boating as a way to get around and see the countryside.  What better way to escape the stress and toil than with a canal boating holiday. Imagine yourself at the helm of your own boat, winding your way along the beautiful canals, with sheep, cows and ducks for company, and seeing amazing wildlife and nature at its best. The serenity of the waterways will relax you like no other holiday could, and the whole family can get involved, with plenty of locks, tunnels, bridges and aqueducts to make it really exciting. If you fancy something more lively, you can even cruise alongside a theme park, or into Britain's 2nd city of Birmingham, and explore all the shops and sights of the city!

Hire a Car
Something very dear to our hearts as Kiwis is having the freedom to go where we want, when we want.  The beauty of hiring a car offers just that, and the UK is one of those lovely countries where it’s easy to get around. They drive on the same side of the car AND the same side of the road!  You’ll be well used to the main highways if you travel on the motorway in NZ. Take the M1 (equivalent to our State Highway 1) between centres, then jump off the main road and tiki tour around the smaller villages.  You’ll find lots of small lanes and alleys that have authentic stonewalls.  You can meander past paddocks and into backstreets – all of which you can only experience with your own transport.

The great news is that all our hire car brands such as Hertz, Europcar and Avis are available up in the UK so you can relax and explore in comfort and security.
