Better still, it’s ready to go all year-round and couldn’t be easier to get to. The Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia is 344,400 square kilometres and is the world's largest coral reef system. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and generally considered to be one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Southern Great Barrier Reef, the section that spans the 300 kilometres of the Queensland coast, from north of Rockhampton to south of Bundaberg, not only showcases this beautiful natural phenomena but enjoys a year-round temperate climate and is only four hours out of Brisbane. Temperatures vary from between 21 and 38°C in summer, December to February, and 8 to 27°C in winter, June to August. The nesting season for the Great Barrier’s famous sea turtles takes place between November and January. There’s so much to enjoy at the Southern Great Barrier Reef, from gem fossicking and hiking to indulging in delicious local cuisine. For the more adventurous, there’s sand boarding or quad biking, or a simple beach picnic overlooking pristine paradise for a more laid back afternoon. Of course, it’s in or on the water where this untouched wonderland really comes into its own, whether it is snorkelling right off the beach, an intrepid dive, swimming with giant marine life or exploring in a semi-sub or underwater observatory. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the spectacular stunning coral gardens, hundreds of species of beautifully coloured fish and marine life.
