Turkish Delights

story by: Mike Williams

A fascinating country where East meets West – Turkey is a Mediterranean marvel that offers breathtaking natural beauty, a multitude of historical wonders and much, much more through its collision of cultures and religions, both ancient and modern.

Set against a diverse cultural backdrop, there’s something for everyone; Whether it’s stunning beaches, exquisite food or a spot of retail therapy where you can really get a bang for your buck.

Culture vultures rejoice
Steeped in history, Turkey is a dream location for culture vultures and archaeology buffs.

The country has many ancient ruins worthy of a day’s exploration, but the ruins at Ephesus stands head and shoulders above the rest as one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world.

Almost completely preserved since its heyday in the Roman Empire, it was once the home of the Temple of Artemis – one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

If that’s not enough to satisfy your sightseeing cravings, the stunning Fairy Chimneys at Cappadocia and the majestic White Terraces of Pamukkale will leave you breathless.

Magical Istanbul
With a rich history that is truly eternal, the peninsula of Istanbul continues to amaze all who grace its soil. This stunning old city boasts a skyline filled with domes, palaces and minarets.

Visit the Blue Mosque, one of the city’s premier historical sites, then head to the Grand Bazaar and barter yourself a bargain with everything on offer, from stunning Turkish rugs to silk garments, glazed tiles and pottery.

Local cuisine is a delicious blend of central Asian, Balkan and Middle Eastern flavours. Indulge in stuffed dolmades made with fresh eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini, stuffed with rice, onions, mint, currants and cinnamon…scrumptious!

Gulet Cruising
There’s no better way to navigate the Lycian coast than by gulet, a traditional sailing boat. Take a private charter yourself or join one of the many very popular gulet cruises which generally accommodate 8-12 guests.

Sailing from bay to bay, you can relax, swim or explore jaw-dropping lagoons all from the comfort of these charming sea-faring vessels.
