The Wild Atlantic Way

story by: Inspire Magazine

Ireland has it all, from beautiful, unspoiled landscapes to dynamic cities full of buzz and vitality.

Built on thousands of years of culture and history, the energy and hospitality of the Irish is known around the world, making the country a popular destination for people who are passionate about travelling.

But with so much to see and do in Ireland, how could you possibly fit it all into one trip? Well, driving a car along the Wild Atlantic Way allows you the freedom to experience the best the country has to offer. This 2,500km route, stretching from the Inishowen Peninsula in Donegal to Kinsale in County Cork, is an opportunity to explore Ireland’s spectacular west coast at your own pace.

Some of the best driving holidays are those where you go off the beaten track, so don’t be afraid to ignore your itinerary every now and again! You’ll soon discover Ireland is full of charming villages bursting with character and good “craic” – Irish slang for fun and entertainment.

But that’s not to say there aren’t plenty of sights to behold on the Wild Atlantic Way – in fact, it couldn’t be further from the truth. The Cliffs of Moher in County Clare are Ireland’s most visited natural attraction. More than 1 million people flock to witness these magnificent wonders each year.

Between County Clare and County Galway, you’ll come across the rugged beauty of Galway Bay and you shouldn’t let it pass you by! Keep your eyes peeled for Galway hookers – a traditional sailing boat used for fishing. The Ring of Kerry, a 79km signposted scenic route, is a fantastic chance to see a number of attractions all at once, including the picturesque Gap of Dunloe and the magnificent Muckross House.

With all this and more to explore, a driving holiday in Ireland is a once-in-a-lifetime experience truly worth repeating.

WELL WORTH DISCOVERING is the Great Western Greenway – it’s 42km of walking and cycling trails stretching from Westport to Achill. Do a little, or the lot, depending on your time and energy levels
