Welcome to the South Pacific

story by: Inspire South Pacific

These six nations each have their own identity, culture and history, and each offers a different holiday experience. Vanuatu retains touches of its British and French heritage but with a strong Melanesian flavour. Across its 83 islands you’ll also find coral reefs, diving, active volcanoes, shipwrecks and cascading waterfalls, which combine to create an unforgettable holiday destination. The mix of French and Melanesian cultures is stronger in New Caledonia, which means that you might be joining in a game of boules in a shady square one day and taking part in a traditional Melanesian bougna (similar to a hangi) the next. With a strong mix of Polynesian and French influence, Tahiti & her Islands offers soaring volcanic peaks and vast coral atolls, sand that’s either strikingly black or impossibly white; fabulous French-influenced food and mouth-watering fresh tropical fruit. If you have a sense of adventure and feel like stepping back in time to a slower pace, Tonga is for you. Many of the ancient traditions remain, and you may make lifelong friends sitting around a kava bowl. You won’t find the quintessential palmfringed sandy beaches on Norfolk Island but it’s a great place to recharge the batteries, breathe in fresh clean island air tinged with the scent of the local pines and boisterous ocean. Lastly there’s Niue where you will find underwater caverns, humpback whales and legendary fishing. One thing is for sure – all of these nations have welcoming people, proud of their culture and eager to share it with their guests.
