Sizzling O`ahu has it all!

story by: Inspire Magazine

Imagine a holiday island escape that effortlessly combines white sand relaxation with big city pizazz. Walk six metres from pristine azure waves to dine in world-class restaurants. Or have a surf lesson before hitting the shops to pick out an evening dress equal to anything you've seen on a catwalk. O`ahu has it all, and it manages to present the scintillating diversity of the ultimate holiday island with impeccable polish.

Have a special night out with silver service one night and then chow down at a shrimp shack the following day. These shacks and trucks have become a culinary institution on O`ahu, and the drive along Kamehameha Highway presents lots of opportunities to try a range of crustacean delicacies. If it's a nice day pull up at the bright yellow truck with the surfboard menus advertising garlic shrimp, coconut shrimp and believe it or not, popcorn shrimp. The food's great and the ocean view is the perfect appetiser.

The undoubted centre of resort life on O`ahu is Waikiki, and with good reason. The beach is splendid, the water crystal clear and the aloha welcome genuine. Spend the morning tanning and swimming before escaping the midday sun to spoil yourself rotten with fantastic shopping. Kalakaua Ave is often referred to as the 'Rodeo Drive of Waikiki', Ala Moana is the world's largest open-air shopping centre and the impressive savings at Waikele Premium Outlets are only a short drive away.

At sundown you'll find Waikiki jam-packed with venues to suit all tastes. If you're looking for a loungy spot with live music and wonderful sunsets try Rum Fire, for everything else from hula dancers to Nashville just walk the boardwalk and listen out for the tunes.

You could spend your whole holiday wandering less than a couple of blocks from your hotel and still have a wonderful time, but venture to the island's North Shore for a day and you'll discover international surfing's holy grail. During winter truly massive waves of over nine metres test the world's bravest, but time your visit between May and September for calm shores.

Hot tips:
  • November and February are best for big wave surfing on the North Shore. From May to September it can be very calm, which is perfect for swimming.
  • www.islandgrocery.com delivers groceries to your condominium, you can even arrange essentials before you arrive.
  • Book a Pearl Harbour tour early – it’s popular and sells out weeks in advance.
  • Ask us about your FREE HOT Discount Shopping Passport for Ala Moana Centre.
