Local Finds: The Wheatsheaf in Symington, near Troon, Scotland

story by: Jo Wedlock

If you want to try a wonderful combination of classic Scottish cuisine in a cosy thatched type cottage with a wonderful garden bar and all the trimmings you’ve seen in movies or read about in books, then you must have a meal and a pint at the Wheatsheaf near Royal Troon in Scotland.  The Inn is a charming 15th century building with a wonderful olde-worlde atmosphere. The pub has been here since 1700s and in the days of stage coaches the inn was an important posting stage. For the last 20 years it has been run by the father, son and daughter team who offer their customers an extensive menu of dishes prepared with care and imagination.

My favourites are the modern takes on traditional Scottish food.  Think Ham and Haddy (Smoked Haddock and Bacon) or Haggis Neeps and Tatties with Sweet Whisky Cream or if you want to go further, Grilled Black Pudding with Leek and Onion Cream – yum!

In good weather, you can enjoy your meal in the superb beer garden which is also the only one for miles around.

The great news is that it is in the heart of some of the loveliest and most interesting countryside of the lowlands.  Just minutes away are Ayrshire's finest golf courses e.g. Royal Troon and Dundonald – the Ayr Races are just 10 minutes away or if you prefer some culture, Scotland's oldest working churches, Symington Parish and Dundonald Castle or he Burns Experience and Tam O'Shanters Cottage- 20 minutes away!
