Mountain Biking in North Vietnam

story by: Jo Wedlock

Because of the mountainous nature of the Northern region, it’s an amazing place to visit and bring your mountain bike (or hire one in Hanoi) and explore off the beaten track.  You can either do this yourself, or join in a cycle tour for a few days before heading off on your own, to get your bearings.  One example is a 3-day mountain biking that can be customized for small group tours, family travel or holidays with kids. An example could be to start and end your cycle trip in Lao Cai province. To get here you either take the overnight train from Hanoi or hire a private vehicle to get to Laocai.  Most of the journey is on paved roads with lots of uphill and downhill rides. You have also the opportunity to pedal on single tracks, off-road biking trails to visit remote ethnic villages.

Northern Vietnam is one of the three regions within Vietnam (the other two regions are Central Vietnam and Southern Vietnam). Of the three regions, the Northern Vietnam region is the oldest and is where the Vietnamese culture originated over 2000 years ago in the Red River Delta. The largest city in the North is Hanoi, the nation's capital; other major cities include Hải Phòng, Nam Định City.
