Local Finds: Panxi Restaurant, Guangzhou, China

story by: Jo Wedlock

If you want a chance to experience a true Chinese restaurant in total luxury but with every dim sum tradition adhered to then the place to go is Panxi in Guangzhou.  You can fly direct from Auckland on China Southern Airlines into Guangzhou which is perhaps better known by its previous English name ‘Canton’.

Panxi is an institution and one of the oldest Dim Sum restaurants in Guangzhou dating back to the HAN dynasty.  It’s beautiful and set in a traditional looking building with a pond of Koi running through the middle.  You can choose to either just arrive, or you can book but keep in mind that if you haven’t booked a table in a private room then you will truely experience the restaurant in the ‘main’ dining room, which can be busy.  I think this is the best way as you eat with the locals and experience the culture and restaurant as its meant to be.

Ask them to bring you a selection of their specalities rather than order from the menu as the chef is amazing and you’ll get their version of what is fresh and current. The chef himself is one of the most famous Dim Sum chefs in the region. Expect mouthwatering little pork dumplings in the shapes of pigs (complete with curly tail and little ears), chicken dumplings the shape of sparrows and other creative objects – what a skill!  This is a good place for NZers travelling to Guangzhou to come and visit.  Its got a reputation as the best DIM SUM place in the area and is the ‘go to’ place – Most of the restaurant staff speak some English also which is a help!

Make sure you don’t go past the opportunity to try the local delicacy by way of chicken feet!  These are fried up and look not unlike KFC, other than the little claws I can see sticking out the bottom - Not my favourite dish although the taste is actually ok if you can get past the feel of the little bones crunching – more mind over matter!
