See the World by Train

story by: Mike Williams

It’s certainly not the fastest way to travel, but seeing the world via an ambling yet epic train journey hits the right romantic notes and often appears high on the bucket list of many world travellers.

On such a journey you’ve got nothing but time to sit back and soak in the best views a country can throw at you, whether it’s dramatic mountains, pristine lakes, endless desert, majestic glaciers, or even iconic landmarks. Of course, although not dealing with traffic is a benefit of train travel, we’re not talking about some ramshackle, standing-room-only commuter rail here, but enjoying big windows, old-fashioned service, and gourmet cuisine.

Rail journeys are particularly popular for people visiting continental Europe, where there are some amazing rail journeys available. While there are faster ways to get from A to B, some of these Europe trains can be pretty quick. Taking the train through Europe can really enhance the enjoyment and comfort of seeing some of the amazing and historic sights that Europe has to offer. For those with a sweet tooth, then the delicious-sounding Chocolate Train goes from Montreux to Broc, Switzerland with a quick trip to the Cailler-Nestlé chocolate factory. In the mood for some luxury? Try the Francisco de Goya, from Paris to Madrid complete with three course dinners and beautiful scenery, or the lavish Transylvanian Odyssey from London to Istanbul, Turkey.

If time isn’t a factor, then check out the epic 19 day Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia. For the truly exotic, don’t miss the Hiram Bingham in Peru, which takes in the Machu Picchu, "City of the Incas."

For something a little closer to home, you could also consider the Southern Spirit or Indian Pacific in Australia. Unfortunately, Kiwis can no longer do the ‘Taumarunui (On The Main Trunk Line)’, but New Zealanders can proudly embark on the TranzAlpine, Coastal Pacific, and the Northern Explorer – all magnificent train journeys in our own backyard.
