The Bernina Express, Switzerland

story by: Mike Williams

If you are lucky enough to be indulging in both Switzerland and Italy on the same holiday, then you may as well maximise the experience and travel between them on the legendary Bernina Express. The 100-year-old train route crosses the Swiss Alps, travelling between Chur in Switzerland and Tirano in Italy.

The four hour, 144 km journey takes in both the snow laden beauty of Switzerland and the sunny rolling country side of Italy, and it includes 196 bridges and 55 tunnels. Along the way you’ll enjoy the Bernina Pass, which at 2,253 metres is sure to take your breath away both in terms of altitude and in beauty. Another of the many highlights is the iconic Landwasser Viaduct, the single track, six-arched bridge that crosses the Landwasser River in Graubünden, Switzerland

Along with the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express is one of the most beautiful train journeys in Switzerland, perhaps even in the World. Like the Glacier Express, much of the journey takes place on the Rhaetian Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes.

Also similar to the Glacier Express, the Bernina Express is anything but quick. However, at over 100 years old and with gradients of 7%, that’s understandable. Besides, with countryside that includes such as sites as the Brusio Spiral Viaduct, Morteratsch Glacier, the Swiss village of Poschiavo, as well as the aforementioned Landwasser Viaduct and Bernina Pass, you certainly won’t be in any rush.
