Port Vila & Surrounds Highlights, Vanuatu

story by: Inspire South Pacific

Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila is the site of the main airport and harbour so most visitors spend time here. There’s no better introduction to the delights of Vanuatu. Enjoy sampling the cuisine – with over 35 cafés and restaurants to pick from, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The country’s colonial past is reflected in the large number of French cafés but there’s also plenty of delicious local food on the menu, including seafood and world renowned Santo beef. Shopping at the markets is a 24-hour experience and you’ll discover the friendliness of the locals. Getting around the town is cheap and easy. Just hop on one of the mini-buses with a red ‘B’ on the number plate. They are used extensively by the locals, and besides being convenient, add immensely to your holiday experience.

• MELE CASCADES TOUR – This popular tour takes you through Mele Village to the base of the beautiful Cascades Waterfalls. Your guide will lead you up to the falls, where you can take in the wonderful view from the lookout before enjoying a refreshing swim in one of the natural pools. There's a steep climb to the waterfalls so you need a reasonable level of fitness.

• VISIT THE LOCAL MARKET – Make time to check out the markets in downtown Port Vila and sample the local fruits or buy a few handicrafts to take home as souvenirs for you or the family!

• SUNSET CRUISE – Is there any other way to end a fantastic day than watching the sunset with a glass of beer or wine in your hand? With a cocktail party atmosphere, mingle with the crew and newfound friends whilst enjoying the music, local beer, wine and canapés.

• LELEPA ISLAND DAY TOUR – This full day experience at one of Efate’s outer islands is not to be missed. Just 40 minutes drive from Port Vila and a 10 minute boat ride, you’ll enjoy a funpacked day of swimming, snorkelling, fish feeding, a guided bush walk, a visit to the local village and of course a sumptuous BBQ lunch.

• GO DIVING – If you’re a diving enthusiast then you’ve come to the right place. Vanuatu offers some of the most fascinating underwater attractions in the world. If staying in Port Vila some good dive sites can be found around Havannah Harbour, Moso Island and Port Vila Harbour. One of the more interesting sites is the ‘Star of Russia’ – a ship built by the same company that built the Titanic.
