Experience Tonga

story by: Inspire South Pacific

The Pacific’s last kingdom, Tonga, consists of 171 islands scattered like pearls across 700,000 square kilometres of ocean. With its population of about 100,000 living on the largest island of Tongatapu, there is no shortage of deserted beaches, and pristine anchorages. Tonga welcomes visitors in lowkey style – this is a place for simpler living and genuine encounters with the local people. Tongans know that what they can offer visitors doesn’t need dressing up – what could be more perfect than a fresh, grilled lobster, a cocktail made from coconut milk and mango, or waking up in your private fale (thatched house) and stepping into a garden shower? Tonga’s tropical waters are renowned for their superb corals and abundant marine life including humpback whales which breed here in winter. Among Tonga’s five island groups are superb locations for sea-kayaking and sailing. Vava’u is famed the world over for its sailing with protected anchorages and sheltered coves. Ha’apai with its myriad of uninhabited coral atolls is perfect for kayaking – imagine paddling up to a near-deserted shore, staying in a fale right on the beach and, later, tucking into a traditional feast.
