Tanzania: Mt Kilimanjaro Climb - Umbwe Route

story by: Mike Williams

One of the least utilised routes up the mountain. This is probably the most beautiful route by which to ascend, and is significantly shorter than the other routes. It also makes the distances covered between overnights at altitude shorter and avoids a lot of the crowding experienced in some sites in season.

Day 1: Moshi
Meet at your hotel for climb briefing.

Day 2: Umbwe
Transfer to base and commence the 5 hour hike to Umbwe caves campsite. All camping equipment is carried by porters who set up camp.

Day 3: Barranco
Head off this morning for your 6-7 hours of hiking with some steep sections to Barranco. A fairly strenuous day today.

Day 4: Karranga Valley

Day 5: Barafu
A shorter day today heading to Barafu camp. Hiking time approximately 3-4 hours.

Day 6: Uhuru
