The Legendary Pacific Coast Touring Route, Australia

story by: Inspire Sydney & Surrounds

Heading north from Sydney along the Pacific Ocean coastline to Tweed Heads, this scenic drive takes you through some of the most striking landscapes in NSW. An almost continuous line of surf beaches, national parks and a hinterland of rolling green hills and friendly villages make this a great drive. There are plenty of attractions, adventures and fun along the way.

Day 1: Sydney – Port Stephens
Head off to The Entrance, one of the prettiest towns on the Central Coast. If you happen to be there on time, check out the famous pelican feeding, held at 3:30pm each day. Then travel through Newcastle on your way to Port Stephens, known for its great dolphin and whale watching opportunities (seasonal). Walk to the top of the headland for some incredible photos of the bay.

Day 2: Nelson Bay – South West Rocks
Make your way to historic Port Macquarie and stop for a seaside lunch break and walk along the breakwater or stroll along the stunning Town Beach or Lighthouse Beach. South West Rocks is just an hour from here and is a sleepy coastal retreat at its barefoot best.

Day 3: South West Rocks – Coffs Harbour
Visit Dorrigo National Park before making your way back to the coast to vibrant Coffs Harbour. The coast that sweeps north and south along the Coffs Coast has amazing beaches to suit all tastes – sandy bottomed point breaks, protected coves and harbours.

Day 4: Coffs Harbour – Byron Bay
Make your way to riverside Grafton, famous for its jacaranda trees, and take a walk through the historic streets. If you need to make a pit spot, Ballina is a great choice with plenty of stylish cafes lining the streets. Drive inland to Lismore, home to more artists and buskers per capita than anywhere else in Australia! Kyogle, 30 minutes away is a pretty place surrounded by rainforest and with two heritage-listed national parks nearby. Once you arrive in Byron Bay you can relax at the beach or if you’re feeling energetic take a walk to the Byron Bay Lighthouse – Australia’s most easterly point – for amazing views.

Highlights worth seeing along the way
DORRIGO SKYWALK – Look down on the canopy from the stunning Skywalk boardwalk 70 metres in the air.
POINT NEPEAN – This is one of the best vantage points on the coast to view the migrating whales and the views from Smoky Cape are sensational.
