Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive, Australia

This magnificent stretch of coastline is one of Australia’s most dramatic and naturally beautiful self-drives. The waters of the Pacific, Tasman and Bass Strait have carved out dramatic headlands and created beautiful coves and beaches. Nestled amongst these natural wonders are dozens of quaint fishing villages, hamlets and thriving rural towns.

Day 1: Sydney – Jervis Bay
Take the scenic Grand Pacific Drive to the coastal city of Wollongong, pass through beautiful Kiama and Gerroa before arriving in Jervis Bay.

Day 2: Jervis Bay – Narooma
Jervis Bay is well known for its resident dolphins and amazing white sand beaches. Stop for lunch at Batemans Bay, before making your way to the coastal village of Narooma.

Day 3: Narooma – Mallacoota
Visit Central Tilba with its array of arts & craft stores before travelling along the beach road to Mimosa Rocks National Park for a picnic and swim in the lagoons before you cross the border into Victoria.

Day 4: Mallacoota – Metung
Head to Cape Conran Coastal Park before you reach Lakes Entrance, a picturesque holiday town and fishing port. Stay in stylish Metung with its great choice of restaurants.

Day 5: Metung – Wilsons Promontory
Call in at Yarram for lunch on the way to Wilsons Promontory National Park, Australia’s southernmost point, famous for its wild beaches and mountain views. Choose from the many walks and look out for kangaroos.

Day 6: Wilsons Promontory – Phillip Island
Stop for coffee at Fish Creek, a tiny township alive with arts, crafts and cafes then cross the bridge to Phillip Island – don’t miss the daily dusk parade of little penguins as they parade up the beach.

Day 7: Phillip Island – Mornington Peninsula
Make your way back across the bridge to Mornington Peninsula. Where you can go for walks, dine in excellent restaurants and taste the regional wines on offer at over 50 cellar doors.

Day 8: Mornington Peninsula – Melbourne
There is plenty of cute towns to explore on the peninsula as you make your way back to Melbourne, just over an hour away.

Highlights worth seeing along the way
MONTAGUE ISLAND NATIONAL PARK – Within Batemans Marine Park this protected island is great for day tours. There’s Aboriginal and lighthouse history, little penguins and fur seals.

JERVIS BAY WHALE & DOLPHIN WATCHING – See the local dolphins and migrating Humpback Whales within the pristine waters of the Jervis Bay Marine Park.
