Byron Bay & Surrounds Highlights, Australia

Byron Bay & Surrounds Highlights, Australia

story by: Inspire Sydney & Surrounds

Byron Bay is renowned for beautiful golden beaches, surf culture and a laid-back lifestyle that’s just a little bit hippy. Luxury resorts and fine restaurants sit alongside yoga schools and market stalls offering treats like locally grown organic coffee. With its handy location just an hour or so south of Gold Coast Airport, this colourful spot is easily accessible. Once you’re here, it’s a good idea to hire a car because as well as that spectacular coastline, you’ll want to head into the hinterland where you will find more stunning natural scenery including National Parks like Mt Warning and Mooball – home to such exotic-sounding species as the long-nosed potoroo and marbled frogmouth. As Australia’s most easterly region, Byron is the closest point to New Zealand – we should claim it for our own.

• Dish Restaurant – Enjoy a dining experience which captures Byron’s individual style and creativity and offers the freshest in Australian produce. Be sure to try the freshly shucked oysters!

• The Rails – Head here for a great night out with the locals, right in the heart of Byron Bay and world famous for its fantastic live music every night of the year! You haven’t experienced Byron until you’ve experienced The Rails.

• Byron Bay Markets – Treat yourself to a little something made or bought from these markets. The community market happens every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, with arts, crafts, jewellery and skin care on offer, as well as plants and furniture. The farmers’ market is on every Thursday morning, offering fresh organic produce and a huge range of other locally produced goodies.

• Crystal Castle – Venture into the hinterland to the Crystal Castle, where you can have your aura read, wander through the magical gardens or mystic statues, and marvel at the exquisite jewellery, crystals, books and treasures on offer. Indulge in the local produce and coffee as you relax and take in the hinterland views.

• Cape Byron Lighthouse – Take an early morning walk to Australian mainland’s most easterly point, and watch the sun rise – the views are amazing and on a good day you can see the entire coast of Byron Bay. It’s popular with adrenaline seekers and you’re likely to see plenty of kites and kitesurfers. It’s also the perfect place to look out for dolphins, turtles, wallabies, and between June and November, humpback whales
