Cradle Mountain Huts Walk, Tasmania Australia

story by: Inspire Australia

Discover the rare beauty and extraordinary diversity of Tasmania’s world heritage-listed Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park. Walk the 60km Overland Track and unwind in the warmth and comfort of private hut accommodation each evening. Enjoy a hot shower, sumptuous meals, freshly baked bread, a glass or two of Tasmanian wine and a comfortable bed.

Day 1: Waldheim to Barn Bluff Hut (12km, 7 hours)
After a gear check, introductions and a light breakfast, journey to Waldheim in Cradle Valley. Walk through ancient temperate rainforest and witness the dramatic glacially-carved Crater Lake – the steepest section of the whole Overland Track is then behind you. At Marion’s Lookout you experience the famous and spectacular views of Cradle Mountain with Dove Lake at its base – worth every step.

Day 2: Barn Bluff Hut to Pine Forest Moor Hut (12km, 6 hours)
The walk today is undulating with a few sections of exposed moorland, no large hills, and much of the walk covered by a duckboard path. Travel across plains where glaciers once sat and slowly moved.

Day 3: Pine Forest Moor Hut to Pelion Plains Hut (10km, 5 hrs)
Make the slow decent around the base of Mt Pelion West to the Forth River before it plunges into the Lemonthyme Valley. Ascend out of the valley onto the Pelion Plains area with mountains all around, some excellent swimming holes, abandoned copper mines and peaceful spots to rest.

Day 4: Pelion Hut to Kia Ora Hut (7km, 3.5 hrs)
Climb to Pelion Gap where you’ll be rewarded with great views both back to the north and forward to the south.

Day 5: Kia Ora Hut to Windy Ridge Hut (9km, 4 hrs)
Wander through some of the oldest forest in the National Park with King Billy Pines as old as 2000 years. Enjoy lunch beside one of the amazing falls in the valley, make your way over Du Cane Gap, then descend beside the spectacular Falling Mountain to Windy Ridge Hut.

Day 6: Windy Ridge Hut to Lake St Clair (9km, 3 hrs)
Lake St Clair is Australia’s deepest natural lake, shaped by glaciers. Today’s walk is mainly through cool temperate eucalypt forest, and birdsong is all around.
