story by: Mike Williams

Join this small group 4WD tour and journey from Broome along an unforgettable trail that leads you into Purnululu National Park, where the impressive striped domes of the Bungle Bungle Range await. Along the way you’ll visit Tunnel Creek, Cruise Geikie Gorge and see the unusual quartz formation, China Wall. If you want to see even more there are plenty of extensions available to this trip.

Day 1: Broome – Windjana Gorge
Depart Broome and travel to Derby, where you’ll visit the Boab Prison Tree. Journey on the Gibb River Road, a remote outback highway. At Windjana Gorge, see ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls. You may also see freshwater crocodiles lazing on the banks of the Lennard River, which runs through the gorge. Travel to Tunnel Creek, a 750 metre-long natural tunnel carved through the Napier Range. With torch in hand, wade through the cool waters to view the oasis that awaits on the other side. Then continue to Fitzroy Crossing.

Day 2: Geikie Gorge Cruise – China Wall – Halls Creek
Enjoy the morning exploring Geikie Gorge, where annual flooding has created a bleached effect on the limestone walls. Join a unique cruise along this stunning gorge, then travel the Great Northern Highway to the historic gold mining town of Halls Creek. See the unusual China Wall, formed out of quartz.

Day 3: Purnululu National Park – Echidna Chasm – Bungle Bungle Range
Today head for Purnululu National Park and hike into Echidna Chasm, a spectacular cleft in the rock massif. Here you’ll stay in tented ensuite cabins at Bungle Bungle Wilderness Lodge, Purnululu National Park.

Day 4: Cathedral Gorge – Piccaninny Creek
Hike into Piccaninny Creek and spectacular Cathedral Gorge. Walk among the beehive domes, as your guide brings the natural history of the range to life. Learn of bushtucker, bush medicine and the area’s significance to local Aboriginals. There’s also time for an optional helicopter flight (own expense). Enjoy drinks and watch the sun set over the domes.
