The island has two distinct characters – historic and contemporary, the former centred on the village of the same name, the latter focused on the new ritzy resorts with their giant casinos, mixed dining options, world class daily and evening entertainment and shops upon designer shops. Taipa Village is renowned for its tiny stores, restaurants and row of lime-green painted villas which were built by wealthy Macanese families in the 1920s and today house the Taipa House Museum.

Here you will find the centuries-old Taipa Village that captures the essence of Macau, with neo-classical Portuguese government buildings sharing the narrow streets with pastel-coloured Chinese Coast houses and small red and gold temples. The biggest attraction is the “food street” containing dozens of restaurants, cafés and fine dining rooms, serving not only Chinese, Portuguese and Macanese food but also African, Indian and Italian. Taipa is home, too, to the Macau Jockey Club, and the Four Faces Buddha Shrine installed at the entrance is a traditional Thai shrine where the many Thai visitors pause to ask for divine guidance for their bets.
