Machu Picchu, Peru South America

story by: Inspire South America

No trip to Peru is complete without visiting the mysterious ‘Lost City of the Incas’, and for most this will be the highlight of any trip. Accessible from the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco, Machu Picchu is one of the most famed and spectacular creations of Inca architecture and makes for a beautiful if not amazing setting.

Believed to have been built in the mid 15th century but not discovered until 1911, the construction of this city is tucked away high in the eastern slopes of the Andes. Rising to an altitude of 2430 metres above sea level between the Huayna Picchu (young peak) and Machu Picchu (old peak), the awe-inspiring ruins are situated in two seperate areas – the agriculture and the urban. The latter includes the civil sector with dwellings, and the sacred sector with temples, mausoleums, squares and royal houses.

With it’s stunning location, Machu Picchu will definitely take your breath away.
