Situated on the banks of the Fen River, the provincial capital was once a flourishing centre of Buddhism by the 6th century AD. Surrounded on three sides by mountains, the city was also an important military town during ancient times. Today it is one of China’s most industrial regions with a focus on coal mining. Tourist attractions including the ancient Buddhist Jinci Temple and the Twin Pagoda Temple because of its unique and inspiring architecture.
