China: Suzhou

China: Suzhou

story by: Inspire Hong Kong & China

Straddling the Grand Canal, Suzhou is a 2500 year old city interlaced with waterways and traditional Chinese gardens. It is known variously as the ‘City of Gardens’, the ‘Venice of the East’, and ‘a paradise on earth’. Its attractions include the humble Administrator’s Garden, Lingering Garden and the Master of the Nets Garden. The city is also famed for its silk production.

Its billing as the “Venice of the East” is testimony to the string of waterways that feed into the ancient Grand Canal. Board a leisurely cruise and you capture the essence of everyday lives in this treasured corner of China.

Understandably, Suzhou is a much larger cosmopolitan sprawl than its original 14.2sq km old city, the city’s many leafy gardens as tranquil as they are presented.

Despite being small, the old city is able to utilise its space – and nothing appears cramped. If you head out on a shopping expedition, Suzhou is famous for its silk and silk embroideries along with traditional woodblock prints, clay figurines, writing brushes and ink stones, jade carvings and fans made from silk or sandalwood.
