Lake District, England - Highlights

story by: Inspire UK & Ireland

The Lakes district is all about the Lakes, National Parks and getting back to basics - here are some of our top recommendations in the area:

  • Situated at the heart of the Lake District, Windermere is England's longest lake and most well known. The lake is very popular with visitors as the bustling towns of Bowness, Windermere and Ambleside all nestle on its shore.
The lake offers a plethora of water-based activities including wake boarding, sailing, swimming or even a leisurely cruise.
  • A historic haunted castle with beautiful gardens framed with rhododendrons and dramatic views of England's highest mountain and the Lake District fells. The World Owl Centre reveals a thrilling insight into these mystical creatures. Enjoy the daily Meet the Birds show and the wildlife spectacle of Heron Happy Hour. With the Meadow Vole Maze, playground, gift shops, café, church, plant centre and more along with great special events throughout the year, Muncaster is well worth a visit.
  • Thirlmere is a pretty, clear lake with a wooded shoreline and is best enjoyed from the west shore which winds its way through the trees. The views around the lake up to Helvellyn and Dollywagon Pike are impressive
  • Grizedale Forest is a haven for wildlife. It’s home to the only remaining indigenous woodland herd of red deer in England. as well as roe deer, buzzards, barn owls and red kites, from the Grizedale Red Kite reintroduction programme.
