Worth swinging your feet out of bed for, we can promise you that. Offering the A-Z of gifts, goods and gastronomy, whatever you’re in the market for, (excuse the pun) there’s a pop-up stall to accommodate. Allow us to introduce the best of the rest: 1. The Rocks Markets, George Street Saturday & Sunday: 10am - 5pm Boasting the most jaw-dropping backdrop in the world, The Rocks is framed by the sails of the iconic Sydney Opera House to the right, and the dazzling Sydney Harbour Bridge just slightly to the left. But we’re here for the shopping, right? Held every Saturday and Sunday under a vibrant arrangement of orange sails, the market sits atop Sydney’s birthplace, a former 1788 convict settlement where history is etched into every crooked pavestone. Between the artisans and craftisans (and ghostly whispers of bygone thieves) you’ll find trinkets, prints and other pieces of interest, with freshly cooked food also available on Argyle Street every Friday from 9am to 3pm. 2. Paddy's Market, Haymarket Wednesday - Sunday: 10am - 6pm From Wednesday to Sunday you can descend on Paddy’s mildly eccentric market for a retina-assaulting assortment of arts, souvenirs, jewellery, leather goods and freshly picked fruits and vegetables. More commonly known as a mecca for backpackers looking for gimmicks to send home, it also sells fresh farmers’ produce, exotic spices and beautiful flowers. Indulge in an Indian curry from the indoor food court serving cheap and cheerful international grub, or walk three minutes to Chinatown where you’ll find the best duck pancakes, spring rolls, egg fried rice - and dim sum (disclaimer: we stole that awesome pun, don’t tell anyone). 3. Fish Market at Pyrmont, Bank Street & Pyrmont Bridge Road Seven days: 7am - 4.30pm From Paddy's Markets use the light rail to get to Pyrmont and its impressive Fish Market. Open daily from 7am, this is one of the largest seafood markets in the world. If you’re adverse to the distinct smells of the ocean and its inhabitants, take a mighty large nose peg. From sashimi to sushi, gigantic mussels and even larger oysters, stack upon stack of Perspex cabinets are packed to their proverbial rafters with formidable seafood. You’ll be fascinated by what comes out of the ocean but you’ll also want to put it on your plate. Gorge on fried squid and golden prawn cutlets, or bag up a kilo of fresh lobster, it’ll only set you back a smooth hundy dollars. Oysters are waiting to be gulped, slurped and guzzled, with sea mongers in bright blue gloves and more shrimp than Bubba or Forrest ever caught. Don’t miss this one. 4. The Grounds Markets, 2 Huntley Street Saturday & Sunday: 9am -3.30pm Jump on a bus to The Grounds Markets held every Saturday and Sunday in the grounds of Alexandria Building. Noted for its local delicacies and fun products, if you like to know what’s up and coming in the world of Sydney produce, you’re amongst friends here. With buskers providing the background melodies, guitar strummers and trumpet players are complemented by stall vendors talking passionately about their goods. With over 80 different stallholders which also change weekly, you can pick up anything from scented soap to sugary pick-me-ups and a legendary shot of speciality coffee; the café here sells the best cup of Joe you’ll ever lock lips with. 5. Bondi Beach Market, Campbell Parade Sunday: 10am - 4pm Steal yourself away from the lifeguards of Bondi Rescue and saunter to the neighbourhood’s second best thing - Bondi Beach Market. For the fashion hunters who like to bespoke their signature look, this one offers an irresistible selection of unique finds and one-off dazzlers. From leather handbags to elegant handmade jewellery and statement pieces that will really set your style apart, it’s a funky weekend hangout with a little shake of bohemian. With so many creatives all in one place, have a yarn with the vendors and soak up the super cool ambience. Time to Sydney? Check out all our best Sydney holiday deals.
