Fiji for Families

Everyone knows that the Fijian Islands are the perfect destination for a great family holiday – beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters (great for snorkelling), warm sunny weather, some of the friendliest people in the world and an endless supply of fun things to do. With Fiji literally on our doorstep – only a three hour flight away – it’s not hard to see why this destination is a Kiwi favourite. The Fijian people have such a natural love of children and a strong affinity for the family; from the moment they arrive, kids will feel welcomed and relaxed and will return home with fond memories.

Generally speaking if you’re looking for a family beach holiday to get away from it all, the island resorts have the best beaches with most offering safe swimming and snorkelling in front of your bure. If you’re wanting a more active holiday with lots of interesting activities and cultural experiences then consider staying on Fiji’s mainland, Viti Levu – you’ll still be able to take day trips out to the islands. Denarau Island, home to several 5-star resorts and just 20 minutes from Nadi International Airport, has become a favourite family stop with fantastic pool complexes.

You’ll find that a number of our resorts have excellent kid’s clubs, facilities and we also have a selection that offer Kids Stay, Play and Eat free deals aswell as all inclusive packages creating more affordable holiday options.

It’s always fun to try and the locals love it! At the very least learn to say Bula (hello) and Vinaka (please and thank you).

Take Mum and Dad to a Meke

A Meke is traditional Fijian dance and song. Whilst there, try some local food like taro and breadfruit in a lovo (feast cooked underground, like the NZ hangi). The Fijians also make excellent kokoda (raw fish marinated in lime juice and mixed with coconut milk) – yummy!

FIJI FOR FAMILIES

Helpful hints for travelling with littlies

As we all know from experience Mum and Dad won’t relax on holiday until the kids are happy. Being prepared for plane travel, a hotter climate, a different style of accommodation and food choices will really help your little ones settle more quickly into their new environment... which means Mum and Dad will get some much deserved R & R too.

  1. INTERCONNECTING ROOMS
  2. Ask about interconnecting rooms/two bedroom villas or bures. You may be pleasantly surprised by the price difference and it means the kids can have their own space for daytime sleeps while the rest of the family can move about more easily.

  3. KIDS CLUBS
  4. Make the most of the Kids Clubs! Fiji can boast having some of the best in the South Pacific and cater for children from 4 years. Babysitters are also very cheap in Fiji and are available throughout the day and evening.

  5. KIDS MENU
  6. Kids menus can be sourced from the hotels so don’t hesitate to ask your consultant. They can also make enquiries about highchairs, cots and kids facilities, it makes decision making around what to take over with you a lot easier knowing in advance what the options are.

  7. AIRCON
  8. Request air conditioning where possible to ensure the kids get a good night’s sleep as rooms can still be hot and sticky when fan cooled especially on the outer islands where it’s always a few degrees hotter than the mainland.

  9. KEEP THE KIDS HYDRATED
  10. Purchase a case of bottled water from Duty Free on arrival into Nadi while waiting for your bags to come through, it saves having to boil water when you get to your accommodation and is often cheaper than buying at the resorts.

  11. BE PREPARED WITH INSECT REPELLANT
  12. For young children it’s a must particularly at dusk. Mozzie nets are useful for cots. A soothing aloe vera gel in case of bites is recommended as the scratching in the heat can keep littlies awake at night.
