Maybe it’s the proximity to Mexico; maybe it’s the perpetually mild climate. Whatever the reason, California’s second largest city still manages to retain the feel of a seaside resort town. It will always garner hoards of visitors with its world-famous, family-friendly SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo & Wildlife Park - aside from the obvious attractions of Shamu and co., it’s just an easy 2.5 hour drive from that other great family institution of Southern California: Anaheim. But there are plenty of other reasons to extend your San Diego stay for a few extra days. For an authentic Mexican experience, there’s no need to cross the border (although you should consider it) – just head for Old Town San Diego and sample to your heart’s content. Add beautiful beaches like Mission Beach, great museums like the USS Midway and fabulous shopping in reinvigorated areas like the Gaslamp Quarter, and you’ve got a destination that’s muy caliente! And for a great city combo - Palm Springs - a 3 hour drive to desert landscape, golf and shopping.
