Gather travellers together and ask them to name their favourite region in England, and chances are everyone will have at least one unique choice. Who can resist falling in love with the tiny fishing ports of Cornwall or the honey-coloured stone villages of the Cotswolds?

But what about a misty morning in Shropshire where time seems to have stood still, or chugging on the ferry across the Mersey River towards Liverpool, or leaning on Hadrian’s Wall listening for the ghosts of long-departed Romans? What makes all this diversity even more remarkable is that it is so accessible and travelling times are short. You can bid goodbye to the dreaming spires of Oxford’s ancient university colleges and in a few hours be roaming the wilds of the Yorkshire moors.

Begin the day beside Lake Windermere and enjoy a pre-dinner drink among the medieval houses of Chester. The temptation can be to try to do all of this at once! There’s so much to see and not enough time. So why not slow down a little. Rent a cottage in Dorset, make friends with the locals at the village pub, or find a friendly bed and breakfast near Brighton Pier and indulge in a classic English seaside holiday. Discover for yourself why so many people become addicted to drifting through Britain on a canal boat as you tie up at a canal-side inn for lunch.

Choose a city, such as St Ives or York, as a base and absorb their special atmospheres by exploring the countryside by day and experiencing the local nightlife in the evening.

Cross the border into Wales and you will enter an ancient kingdom rich in folklore and national pride, where choirs really do still sing in the valleys and rugby is a passion. The Scottish too are fervently proud of their culture, their heather-clad glens and mysterious lochs. In these faraway corners of Britain you may still hear Gaelic and Welsh spoken, a true indication that you have come a long way from the cosmopolitan south. Northern Ireland’s slow paced rural lifestyle will relax you, whilst Belfast’s trendy and fast paced city living will delight you.
