Lyon, where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet close to the French Alps, has long been a European crossroad. Beyond Lyon lies the Mediterranean and central Europe. But for any food-lover thoughts of passing quickly through the Rhône Valley are soon put aside.

It would be a brave French city to claim it has the country’s finest food but Lyon does so and no-one seems to argue. This is a city sprinkled with multi-Michelin star restaurants and with bouchons – family-style bistros offering the best of local cuisine. Pork is a speciality as are sausages but also on the menu are wild game, poultry and soft cheeses. What to wash it down with? It would have to be a Beaujolais wine – another classic that this region is home to.

Beyond Lyon lies the Rhône River, complete with medieval castles, châteaux and of course hundreds of vineyards. And to the east of the river is the Ardèche, a land of steep ravines and waterfalls, stonewalled villages and wooded wilderness.
