Hills Awash with Lavender

Fields ablaze with fragrant flowers, olive trees clustering the arid mountainsides – Provence in southern France seduces its visitors not just with its landscapes but with its fragrance.

Villages like Grasse and Gordes cling to craggy hilltops inland, while beside the Mediterranean the white horses of the Camargue gallop among the marshes. Nearby the rollicking seaport of Marseille serves up classic bouillabaisse while basking in the title of France’s oldest city. Avignon is ancient too – the Romans had a city here once but today it entices visitors with its magnificent 14th century Palace of the Popes.

The Romans left their mark on nearby Aix-en-Provence as well: you too can luxuriate in the famous hot springs. Breakfast at a café along the tree-lined Cours Mirabeau and sip a café au lait in the warm Mediterranean sunshine. The town was home to one of the great Impressionist painters, Cézanne, and Picasso also spent time painting here. A walk through the sunflowers on a shimmering afternoon will show you why.

Provence HighlightsProvence - Pont du Gard

Avignon
- surrounded by amazingly well preserved ramparts built in the 1300’s, the Old Town is a maze of pedestrian streets and cobbled lanes that lead to the Palais des Papes. Built during the 14th century for the Pope of the time it is the largest Gothic palace in the world.

Aix en Provence - called the ‘Left Bank’ of Provence, Aix (pronounced ‘X’) is a classy town with wide boulevards, lovely squares lined with 17th & 18th century mansions. Cezanne is also one of the towns most famous sons and you can visit his studio that is exactly as he left it.

Arles - became a Roman town after Julius Caesar distributed the land among his veteran legionnaires in 46 BC. Today you can still see some incredible Roman sites such as the arena & theatre.

Pont du Gard - 2000 years ago over 1000 people worked for 5 years on the construction of the Pont du Gard. The objective was to bring water to the city of Nîmes via a 50km long aqueduct, it is an amazing engineering feat.

Gordes - a beautiful old village with narrow cobbled streets perched on the southern edge of a hill. The town is made from a light stone that glows orange in the morning sun and the view out across fields and forests and small perched villages is a real ‘Provençal’ scene.

Lavender - 4km from Gordes is the stunning 12th century Abbey de Senanque which is framed by fields of lavender in the summer.

Roussillon - a beautiful village famous for its red and yellow ochre cliffs. The rocks have eroded over the years creating amazing shapes, gullies and a maze of caves. Painters and photographers rave about this place!
