Renaissance châteaux, medieval monasteries, troglodyte caves, vineyards and Europe’s last untamed river – the Loire Valley overflows with riches. For centuries this was the playground of royalty, so you’ll need time to explore even a fraction of its treasures.

Fairytale castles like Chinon sit perched above the river. Others such as Chenonceau actually span the water’s flow, while Azay-le-Rideau sits like a tiny jewel in the centre of its own moat. Vast Villandry is surrounded by a wonderful tapestry of colourful vegetable plants and other châteaux have glorious gardens devoted to medieval, perfumed plants or roses. Even the names breathe romance – Chaumont, Chambord, Sully-sur-Loire.

Along with its architectural masterpieces, the Loire Valley has other gems. There are museums of hunting (and poaching!), classic cars, porcelain, music – even shirt making! Sip local Sancerre wine and taste gourmet goat’s cheese, cruise the Loire itself and slip gently into the past.
