Tucked into this south-western corner of France are some of the most picturesque villages to be found anywhere in this vast country. The Dordogne combines more than its fair share of these with idyllic wooded river valleys, hilltop châteaux and gourmet delights including truffles and walnut bread. The village of Sarlat is justifiably famed for its narrow lanes and cobbled streets while medieval Périgueux retains its charms, fulfilling the role of regional capital. Hidden in the hills are the world renowned prehistoric cave paintings of Lascaux. Those with a nose for wine will find themselves drawn further south to Bordeaux and the surrounding wine country – here lie the cellars of Mouton-Rothschild and Latour. The city itself loves its food too. Riverside stalls tempt passers-by with seafood delights such as freshly caught prawns. Nestled near the foothills of the Pyrenées lies Lourdes, one of the world’s great pilgrimage sites, and the storybook fortified town of Carcassonne – a confection of ancient towers and battlements.
Dordogne & The South-West Highlights Dordogne Delicacies - better known to the French as the Périgord region it is home to two of France’s famous delicacies - black truffles & foie gras. Sarlat - a lovely medieval town, beautifully restored, that is perfect for wandering. The 13th-16th century buildings are sandstone and are a beautiful golden colour when the sun is shining. There are plenty of wine and foie gras shops, galleries, cafes & restaurants. Saturday and Wednesday are market days. Castelnaud - perched high above the river it is spectacular to look up at, and when you are there the views are great. It also houses the Museum of Medieval Warfare with displays of weapons, armour and war engines. La Roque Gageac – a stunning village at the foot of a cliff on the Dordogne River. It has a fort built into the rock and its stone houses are crammed against the cliff, linked by pathways. Cave Paintings - people were living here some 400,000 years ago and there are some great sites to prove this. Lascaux II is the most famous, it is a copy of the original cave paintings just a few hundred metres away. The original caves were closed in the 1960’s as the breath from visitors was damaging them. They were created using original techniques and there is a museum there explaining their background. Rocamadour - a small village with a dramatic setting climbing up the side of a cliff. The village is essentially just one paved street, lined with medieval houses. St Emilion - is surrounded by vineyards and chateaux. The village itself is a pretty town, built with yellow stone, with lots of winding, steep, narrow streets. The majority of the town is pedestrian so it is perfect for strolling around.
