The birthplace of the Renaissance; a city overflowing with art and astounding architecture at every turn, Florence is almost overwhelming in its riches.

Michelangelo’s David, Botticelli’s Venus and Giotto’s Madonnas – you’ll want to feast your eyes on them all. But pace yourself – find a perch among the sculptures in the 14th century Loggia della Signoria near the Uffizi Gallery and enjoy the buskers, or window-shop along the 13th century Ponte Vecchio, the bridge across the Arno River that is lined with glittery jewellery shops. Another great place for peoplewatching is outside the Duomo, Florence’s extraordinary pink, green and white-striped marble cathedral.

Beyond Florence lies the countryside of Tuscany and neighbouring Umbria – terracotta roof-tiles glowing among olive groves, vineyards and tall cypress trees. Take the bus to Fiesole for spectacular views of Florence or head further afield to hill towns such as San Gimignano or Cortona, medieval Assisi or the perpetually Leaning Tower of Pisa..
