Papeete, on the island of Tahiti, is French Polynesia’s capital and its international gateway. Even if you are visiting other islands, you’ll need to spend at least a night or two in Papeete en-route.

Papeete is full of life and colour and a perfect introduction to the islands’ unique fusion of French flair and exotic Polynesia. Stroll through Le Marche to see a mouth-watering array of tropical fruits, along with flower leis, and handcrafts such as rainbow-hued pareau’s (sarongs).

At nightfall head for the waterfront and the famed Roulottes – mobile restaurants cooking delectable meals, including fresh fish and crepes and cuisines ranging from Italian to Chinese. People-watching is part of the fun here too.

To explore the island join the Tahitians on Le Truck. There are lots of these brightly decorated quirky vehicles circling the island. Simply flag one down and pay when you hop off.
