The Pearl of the Pacific with one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world, Bora Bora is a true island fantasy. Not surprisingly this jawdropping scenery has also made Bora Bora a haven for the world’s glitterati who saviour its charms from the ultimate in luxury hotels.

This was the birthplace of the overwater bungalow and Bora Bora has continued to develop this out-of-this-world style of accommodation to new levels with glass floors under which tropical fish swim and breakfasts delivered by outrigger canoe. Board a sunset cocktail cruise then dine like a star.

Visitors who can tear themselves away from this idyllic existence can hire a boat or join a cruise to sail amongst the hundreds of motu (tiny islands) and coral gardens that dot the lagoon, go snorkelling or diving. On the main island under dramatic Mt Otemanu are 4WD trails to explore and exotic black pearls to buy.

• Sharks, rays and other marine life are in abundance here which makes diving a very popular activity
• Bora Bora’s original, ancient name was Vava’u which suggests that the original inhabitants of this seven-million-year-old island arrived from Tonga
• In the Tahitian language there is no “B,” so Bora Bora’s actual name is Pora Pora, meaning “first born”
