It’s early evening. The thumping of drums signals the traditional kava ceremony is about to start. This morning you went horse-riding on an almost-deserted beach, and this afternoon you watched tiny tropical fish giving their best Nemo impersonations. If you were a golfer you’d spend tomorrow at the world-class Natadola Golf Course or instead opt for sand-surfing at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes. That’s the beauty of the Coral Coast – there’s so much on offer for every type of holiday from the most active to the extremely sedate.

Of course, a great holiday isn’t just about life in a bubble. The Coral Coast is 90 minutes’ drive from Nadi Airport: perfect for experiencing Fiji beyond the resorts. Hire a car and take your time, stop for fresh watermelon at a roadside stall, and return the friendly “Bula” offered by every local along the way. By the time you arrive at your resort, you’ll be well and truly on Fiji time.

Insider Insights

“Natadola Beach is breathtaking with heaps of white sand and a lovely cool breeze. We were lying on the
soft sand when a couple of Fijians on horseback leading a couple more horses rode past. We ended up cantering along this stunning beach and splashing through the clear water – awesome!”

“There’s a cute restored sugar cane train that runs ‘every now and then’ that you can take a tour from Shangri La’s Fijian Resort through the Intercontinental to Natadola Beach. This is a very novel way to travel where you can really take in the scenery and the children had a ball on it.”
Joanna McGrath

“The closest most travellers come to Fijian culture on a Fiji holiday is a dance show at a resort. However with Sigatoka River Safari’s I really enjoyed the side of Fiji not usually on the Tourist agenda. The locals love the boat arriving as it provides an opportunity to meet new people, introduce their culture, share a bowl of kava and traditional Fijian lunch. A great day out!”
Rebecca Goodin

“No one plays rugby like the Fijians and if you’re staying at the Outrigger Fiji during the season you could see the local Nadrogra Rugby Team (the Fiji champs) in action. Outrigger sponsor the team and for only F$55 per adult you’re guaranteed a good day out including admission to the VIP lounge at the ground and the opportunity to meet the boys. This is a must do activity for you ‘rugby lovers’ out there.”

Bula sandCoral Coast Highlights

• Surfing - Fiji is well known for its fine reef breaks. Frigates Pass is the most famous surf spot accessible from the Coral Coast, with a world-class left-hand barrel. The Waidroka Bay Resort provides boat transfers to Frigates Pass, as well as the other reef breaks along this stretch of coast. Sigatoka has a beach break for less experienced surfers.

Golf - There are nine-hole courses at The Naviti Resort and Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort, as well as a nine-hole putting course at the Warwick Fiji and the new 18 hole championship golf course at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa.

Sigatoka Sand Dunes - The Sigatoka Sand Dune Information Centre is the starting point for a walk across the dunes to the open sea. Remains of the ancient Lapita people are still being uncovered in the dunes.

• Kalevu South Pacific Cultural Centre - Opposite Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort, the centre gives an insight into traditional Fijian housing, lifestyle and history.

Meke Show – All resorts on the Coral Coast will host a Meke show at least once during the week. Well known meke types are fan dances performed by women, and spear or club dances performed by men. If you are lucky, children from the local village will also come to perform for you and show off their fantastic singing voices.

Fire Walking – Enjoy a Fire Walking show at Hideaway Resort. Watch in awe as men from the local Beqa Island walk barefoot on the white-hot stones without being burnt.

Rafting - Bilibili rafting (rafts made from bamboo) is a popular day trip in either Sigatoka or Fiji’s adventure playground – Pacific Harbour.
