Aitutaki and its lagoon captivate visitors from that first glimpse out of an aircraft window. Startlingly white swathes of sand contrast with the deep azure of the encircling Pacific Ocean and the remarkable turquoise of its lagoon studded with tiny islets.

Just a 45-minute flight from Rarotonga it is possible to visit Aitutaki on a day trip, swim with the schools of tropical fish in the lagoon, luxuriate in the sand under a palm tree and eat freshly caught barbecued fish. Make sure you have your passport with you if you go ashore on One Foot Island – the tiny post office there will stamp it for you.

But better still, why not stay several days - you can live simply or in luxury. No matter what style you opt for the delights of the lagoon are there for everyone as is the fun of hiring a motorscooter or a bike and exploring deserted beaches, tiny villages and their white-washed churches.

Insider Insights

“Really pleased we made the extra effort to extend our trip with a visit to Aitutaki. From the moment we walked out on the tarmac to board the plane to when we landed back in Rarotonga this was a real experience and brilliant to visit this ‘outer island’ with its clear blue lagoon and white sands.”
Joanna McGrath

“Tekings Lagoon Cruise was so much fun – the guide was great and it was amazing to be out on that amazingly turquoise lagoon. The cruise was laid back and friendly but really well run. One of the coolest things we did was feed the schools of fish while we were snorkelling in the water. It took a while to get used to coming eye to eye with a whole bunch of hungry fish!”
Kirsty Guidery

“Fishing outside the lagoon in the deep water is exhilarating and abundant with game fish such as wahoo, baracuda, yellowfin tuna and marlin. The boat charters have all the gear and knowledge you need for a successful day and there’ll be many stories to tell back at the Aitutaki Game Fishing Club over a beer.”
Mike Geary

“One Foot Island is the stunning motu of Tapuaetai (One Foot Island) and is the perfect spot for picnicking
and snorkelling. Remember to take your passport so you can get it stamped from the world’s smallest post office!”
