Blessed with rugged peaks, a lush tropical interior and countless waterfalls, Upolu is Samoa’s second largest island and home to its colourful capital, Apia. This city oozes a colonial charm reminiscent of the writings of Somerset Maugham. Take a stroll through the city’s bustling Maketi Fou market, which boasts some of the South Pacific’s finest produce. Here you can enjoy a refreshing drink of coconut milk, or stock up on tropical fruit. If you’re looking for handicrafts, head for the flea market to pick up exotic presents for those at home.

Upolu has scores of dazzling white beaches and most are undeveloped, making it easy to find your own secluded cove. But take time, too, to venture inland to enjoy the verdant rainforest that echoes to the sound of tropical birds and is threaded by rivers and spectacular cascading waterfalls.

To make the most of the magnificent natural attractions Upolu has to offer, hire a car. It’s the easiest way to get around the island and you’ll be travelling in air-conditioned comfort.

Insider Insights

“If staying in town, hire a car for the day, take a drive around the island and explore. Cut through the middle of the island and stop for a look at Papapapai-uta Waterfall and then head down to Coconuts Beach Club Resort & Spa for a refreshing Vailima (the local beer) and home made tuna sandwich.”

“If you’re around on a Sunday try to attend a church service. The singing is amazing and this is a great way to experience the local culture. Everyone is so friendly! Some services can go for up to three hours, but don’t worry you don’t have to stay for the whole time if you don’t want to - you can come and go as you please. Highly recommend taking a fan, as the majority of the churches don’t have air conditioning. Ladies, don’t forget to wear something that covers your shoulders and knees.”Upolu water slides

“For a bit of fun with a difference head to the Papaseea Sliding Rocks. This is a great place to cool off and is where the locals go to ‘hang out’ on weekends. For only 2 tala (less than NZ$1) you can enjoy these waterfalls that are natural waterslides - some are small and some are big so there’s a size for everyone! But beware that you do need a reasonable level of fitness as there are quite a few stairs that take you down to these mountain spring pools.”

“For the best drag queen show in Samoa drop into the Zodiac Bar on the cross island road. These colourful dancing and singing shows are sure to open your eyes and when its time to call it a night you’re sure to have had a very memorable experience – enjoy!"
