Masterton Travel Guide

The Wairarapa, between the Tararuas and the Pacific, from Palliser Bay to the Manawatu Gorge.

Stunning coastal scenery can be enjoyed in the south as far as Cape Palliser and on the west with gems such as Castlepoint Beach.

The Wairarapa region was the first in New Zealand in which sheep farming was undertaken on any scale because of its flatness and still boasts a thriving farming community.

While today pastoral farming is still the backbone of the local economy, the area around Martinborough and south of Masterton, the main town, is now a grape growing and wine-making region, producing a high quality range of wines, both red and white.

To the west and south the region is bordered by the sometimes fierce Pacific Ocean and Cook Strait, and to the east by the Tararua and Ruahine Ranges.

Access from the north is from Hawkes Bay and from the Manawatu via the river gorge of the same name.
